The role of the probation officer
A probation officer operates as guardian ad litem during adoption procedures. A guardian ad litem is a guardian appointed by the court to represent the wellbeing and interests of the child being adopted.
It is a critical role in the adoption proceedings. It is the duty of the probation officer to:
- Investigate the living circumstances of the child
- Ascertain the child’s emotional needs
- Interview persons relevant to the adoption
- Provide the court with a final report and recommendation
